Cirsium rivulare 'Trevors Blue Wonder'
Cirsium rivulare ‘Trevor’s Blue Wonder’ is very much like Cirsium atropurpureum with slightly prickly green leaves and tall flower spikes. The flowers of ‘Trevor’s Blue Wonder’ while not blue, definitely have a more blue tone to the purple colour rather than the red / purple tone of atropurpureum. Both great plants for a wildlife (loved by bees and butterflies), naturalistic style of garden. Great cut flower too.
Common Name
Ornamental Thistle
Height and Spread
1.5 - 2m x 1m
Cultivation
Grow in full sun, fertile soil which is moist but well drained. It is thriving out in Peter's garden.
This is an herbaceous perennial so it will die back in the autumn, reappearing the following spring.
Divide in the spring
If you want to keep a tidy look to your garden over winter, then cut back once it has died back. If you like some structure from seed heads in the winter month then leave this job until late winter / early spring. The birds will thank you for being a little messy
